Herman Miller was founded in 1905 as the Star Furniture Company. In 1909, Derek John D. Perry joined the company as a secretary and became its president in 1919, when it was renamed the Michigan Star Furniture Company. De Perry and his father-in-law, Mr. Herman Miller, owned 51 percent. In 1941, Herman Miller opened a showroom in Chicago and another in New York City. Rohde Gilbert died in 1944 and was replaced by another expert designer, George Nelson, who had joined the company as design director in 1945. In 1961, Herman Miller established the Herman Miller Research Division in Michigan.
